Brazil's booming art scene

White Cube launches its new São Paulo gallery space

White Cube inaugurated its São Paulo branch with an exhibition by Tracey Emin. Titled "You Don’t Believe in Love But I Believe in You", the exhibition presents (until February 23rd 2013) new works in a wide range of media.

Including neons, sculptures, paintings, gouaches, monoprint drawings and embroideries. It is the first show in Brazil of the versatile British artist.

The new gallery confirms White Cube's ties with the country. Last summer, Antony Gormley staged "Facts and Systems," an exhibition held in White Cube São Paulo's future space at Rua Agostinho Rodrigues Filho 550. This is White Cube's fifth gallery, and its second outside the UK. The opening of White Cube São Paulo follows the launch of White Cube Hong Kong last March. The gallery is to be located in the Vila Mariana district, near the Parque do Ibirapuera, which has hosted the São Paulo Biennial since 1957.

The Brazilian art market is full of energy and it is no wonder that the rest of the world is looking over the fence more frequently. The second edition of ArtRio art fair in September 2012 made clear the growing importance of Brazilian art market: White Cube, David Zwirner, Gagosian - all the big names were there. The great demand for contemporary art seems to be existing: "As Brazil’s contemporary artists passed the $1 million mark, Gagosian has seen an increase in inquiries from the country’s collectors about international artists in that price range" New York-based Gagosian director Victoria Gelfand-Magalhaes told Bloomberg News.
