For Thomas Ruff, like for many people, space is a fascinating place. Already several years ago the artist from Düsseldorf portrayed stars and planets in photographic series. The work group ma.r.s is based on images from a NASA internet database. Thomas Ruff used the publicly available images, changed and coloured them, transforming them into original and subtle pieces of art. The photos, which were originally taken from a space probe at great altitude, seem as close as if one would sit in an airplane approaching the red planet. Thomas Ruff presents science fiction in the humble dress of reality and brings to mind just how far we have already penetrated the unknown while still remaining in the dark.
