Thomas Locher was born in 1956 in Munderkingen, Germany and lives and works in the capital city of Germany, Berlin. Locher picks out interpersonal relations and human interaction as central themes by using sign systems - that is communication systems - as artistic media. The "Nummernarbeiten" for instance are geometric compositions with numbered colour fields. The artist wants to create an art work about language without using this language itself. The question is: Is it possible to express linguistic issues without words and sentences? It is no question of aesthetical pleasant creations. What matters is to make clear: What you see cannot be understood just from what you see and nevertheless there is a system. Locher wants to put into question language and words as determinants of thought and perception.
