The works of the Austrian artist Lorenz Estermann are based on photographies of lonely and forlorn places at the fringes of civilization, which he collects during his travels in Central and Eastern Europe. Esterman changes the appearance of these photographs by painting them over, adding drawings or joining them with other objects into collages. He also creates three-dimensional spacial models mainly consisting of arrangements of buildings by changing the spatial dimensions of the places depicted, by adding elements that appear to be out of place at first sight, or by working with colours that do not blend into the overall picture easily. With his unique methods of treating the original material, Estermann gives the places shown in his picture a new, intense meaning, which captivates the observer and makes him reflect upon their true character.
