Gilbert and George

RAT / London Pictures

The fundamental theme of the two affected pseudo-gentlemens' work is the system of values of social standards, the squeamish British order and the symbols of English etiquette. In their large-sized “London Pictures” Gilbert and George collected headlines announcing scandals and catastrophes from British newspapers and organized and arranged them thematically. This created series of specific social moods, sometimes presented on huge tableaus, always underlaid with a portrait of the two artists. Unemotional, they look from beneath the loud messages, seemingly torn between educational comment and stoic gentleman culture.
