Daniel Richter was born in Eutin, Germany in 1962 and studied with Werner Büttner at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg from 1991 to 1995. Afterwards he worked as an assistant to Albert Oehlen and since 2006 he is a professor at the Acadamy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria. Richter has been painting figuratively since 2000. His landscape are often reminiscent of nostalgic illustrated story books. Figures are placed in these imaginary landscapes, but their exact roles are left to a subjective interpretation. This creates an often surreal scenery in his paintings. The settings refer to an apocalyptic world à la Francis Bacon or Hieronymus Bosch. Birds and skulls, as they are seen on the color etchings "Ohne Titel" (2007), appear consistently in Richter's work since 2000.
