Born in the German city of Braunschweig in 1969, Tina Berning has become notable for her watercolors and drawings, in which she inspects the human body, its beauty and its restrictions. In her works, Berning employs recurrent motives of glossy life-style magazines, which are contrasted with torn pieces of old, yellowed paper. The figures in Berning's works display beauty, but are never whole. They are vulnerable and fragile. Inconsistent with our preconceptions and stereotypes, they increase our awareness of their outer appearance, and make us receptive to the conception of man behind them.Tina Berning
