Tom Wesselmann

Untitled (Stomach sunk in whiskey)

Tom Wesselmann (b.1931 in Cincinnati, Ohio) is a pop art legend like Andy Warhol or Roy Lichtenstein. Being an important protagonist of this art movement, Wesselmann concentrates on the theme of the female nude, quite often in sexually provocative positions. The "Great American Nudes" can be found in museums all over the world. The stylistic character of Wesselmanns work shows analogies to the advertisements of the 1960s and 1970s, treating the given patterns with irony and alienation. Only the beholder can decide whether the artist criticizes western consumerist societies or humorously glamourizes them.
