Richard Artschwager
Sailors
Richard Artschwager was born in Washington, D.C. in 1923 and is known as one of the most important representatives of Minimal Art. He works as a painter, object artist, graphic designer and sculptor and his work categorally resists any and all definitive labelling. In the original the work „Sailors“ is meant to be understood versatilely. The motif (the sailors) is framed in several parts, the mirrored frames thwart the picture like a classic cross window frame, which is reflecting the viewer in turn. The perspective and position is not determined directly and unabiguously. The sailors seem to look at the viewer through this „window frame“. So the picture does not open the look into the world of the image in a typical way. The relationship between insight and outlook leaves unanswered questions. |
