Meisje

For the American pop artist Mel Ramos the language of publicity and comic serves as a medium to express his critique of the all too smooth and superficial aesthetic in the world of consume and merchandizing. At the back of his mind he has also the nudes of western art history - from Ingres to Manet. "Meisje" is a large-size drawing of a young "girl" with a perfect body and a smile that is frozen to a mask. The combination with the blue lettering "Meisje" intensifies the impression that the girl is much less a human being than a trademark, an artificially produced stereotype.
