Lawrence Schiller

Ohne Titel (Roll 14 Frame 17)

A beautiful woman by the pool certainly looks good on a photo. But is that already art or just Pin-Up photography? We don't know whether Lawrence Schiller thought about this question when he shot Marilyn Monroe in a swimming pool in 1962, but we certainly do know that those photos made the then unkown artist famous. True, the photos probably caused furore because Marilyn Monroe was in them, she was already rather famous at this point, to say the least. She was fed up with her image as a naïve sex symbol, and while this aura also surrounds her in those photos she appears more mature than in her film classics. Maybe it was this interesting tension that made his photos so popular, but the blonde star's early death certainly gave them a boost. She passed away shortly after the shooting, those photos are the last ones of Marilyn Monroe.
