Jens Wolf - Biography

Jens Wolf (born in 1967) went to the Art Academy of Karlsruhe (Karlsruher Akademie) from 1994 to 2000. He works on the basis of the historical development of abstract painting and refers to the artistic paradigms in order to appropriate them with his painting. In doing so he works mainly with art works that correspond to the concept of Geometric Abstraction - from Hard Edge, Systemic Painting and Constructivism up to Concrete Art. All these styles abnegate the individual manner of the artist. The paradigms for the paintings of Jens Wolf come from Josef Albers, Frank Stella or Piet Mondrian. But the artist refers also to the works of Karl Benjamin or Ilya Bolotowsky, which are not very well-known in Europe because of the predominance of the American Abstract Expressionism.

For Jens Wolf, Abstract painting is a reservoir of patterns to work with

By formal adoption the artist unmasks the ideal of a representation that is independent from time and space as an illusion and points to the proximity to copy, which is immanent in painting. Indeed, the archetypical shape - circle and square - are present in the work of Jens Wolf as representative signs of rational, spiritual and universal order. But they come back in a blurred, unfinished form. Traces of production, such as pencil lines from the artistic sketch, witness the process-like character of painting. Geometric Abstraction paintings insist on the pure evidence of colour in clear, geometrical shapes. In this way the conditionality by the executing subject is completely covered. In contrast, Wolfs paintings consciously show a lack of perfection. Simple ply wood boards form the "canvas". They become part of the painting. The natural texture of the material is like a quiet but constant noise behind the geometric shapes. Traces of use like edges that are partially fractured suggest that the boards derive from other contexts and are being reused. In this way Wolf refers to his aesthetical concept of "recycling" the different styles of Geometric Abstraction.
