Hadrien Dussoix - Biography

The world of media and is influence on the Swiss artist Hadrien Dussoix, born in 1975, is the foundation of a painting, which deals with borders, contradictions and poesy. The artist picks up striking sentences with convincing, provocative and lyrical content and adapts these to his painting. Large letters occupy the expanse of the canvas and become the central subject and go beyond the pure meanings of the word.

Writing becomes painting, painting becomes writing. In diverse ways Dussoix’s works also engage in a dialogue with the observer, like when the artist composes letters of varnish on a canvas in works such as “Your best body ever”, “Lips into your lips”, “More bass more riff”, in which, due to the materiality of the works, the observer sees himself, thereby becoming a part of the work.

 

“What remains of art history?” – This question also underlies Hadrein Dussoix’s work. On an imposing monochrome canvas the artist paints churches in the renaissance or gothic style, which according to him is an unalterable landmark of our cultural history. He places the view of the past against our present view and uses spray colour, in order to reproduce sacred buildings and transfer them into our own age.

 

Spontaneity in the implementation and simplicity in the form blend into an aesthetic and strong visual effect, whereby the natural contours continue to highlight and illuminate the distinctive qualities of this great work of art.

 

Opposite the paintings are a row of originally designed sculptures. Pieces of plaster, ceramics and finds, as well as random objects produce a disorderly archaeological image, in which past and present cultures become blurred.

 

Hadrien Dussoix affords us a modern view into the art of the past. In his quest for a new aesthetic the artist mixes different techniques in his work and combines spontaneous intuitions with classicisms of the past, combines punk with the sacred – art on the other side of good and evil.

Hadrien Dussoix lives and works in Geneva. He studied at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and Haute Ecole Supérieure des Arts Appliqués Geneva. From 2006 till 2008 he successively won the prestigious “Swiss Art Award” for young artist.
