Alex Katz is a master of spaces, colours, composition and contrast. The American artist is a quintessential painter with a very pure, almost traditional style. Yet his works look anything but traditional and they must have looked even less so when he began his career in the 1960s. His works are only different from those of his colleagues at a second glance. It is a certain autonomy, an autonomy that refers back to traditional working methods that Katz adapts to a new formal environment. In the centre of the system is the artist with his idea, his vision, working unswervingly. Maybe it is this focus on his own work that makes it easy for Katz to move between different graphic mediums without deviating from his artistic path.
