The Tate has released the list of finalists to the 2013 Turner Prize. The selected artists to the £25,000 prize are: Laure Prouvost, Tino Sehgal, David Shrigley and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye.

Works by French artist Laure Prouvost (35) were presented more than once recently: e.g. with her video installation which she produced in collaboration with the Whitechapel Gallery. The video installation is the result of a 6-month long residency in Italy as part of the Max Mara Art Prize for Women.
In her unusual videos Prouvost includes cuts and montages. German-British artist (36), Tino Sehgal, presented the work These Associations, showcased last year at the Tate Modern. Sehgal invites the visitors to participate in his performances. The jury said about him that he tested the limits of artistic material and the public’s perception in an entirely new and significant fashion. Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, London-based Ghanaian artist (36), paints realistic portraits of imaginary characters. For the jury, her work raises relevant questions about the way in which we read pictures in general, particularly when it comes to dark subjects. The last finalist, David Shrigley (44) is famous for his cartoons tinted with melancholy and humour. The artist has also been spotlighted on the occasion of the release of the video clip of Blur’s Good Song. He has been selected by the jury for “David Shrigley: Brain Activity”, a solo retrospective held at the Hayward Gallery, where he presented drawings, photographs, sculpture and video.

The Turner Prize is presented every year to an artist under 50, living, working or born in Britain for an outstanding exhibition in the previous 12 months. An exhibition featuring the works of all four artists will start on 23 October 2013 in the City that was chosen as the UK City of Culture 2013, Derry-Londonderry in Northern Ireland. The winner will be designated on the occasion of a ceremony to be held on 2 December 2013.
