Stockholm - Moderna Museet: Cindy Sherman. Untitled Horrors

Cindy Sherman is one of the most important artists of our time. Since her breakthrough with Untitled Film Stills in the early 1980s, she has overturned both contemporary art and the attitude to photography. Her images became key works, and collectors are willing to pay huge amounts of money for her works. Sherman regularly leads the ranking of the most expensive female artists. Like other artists of her generation, Sherman explores popular culture and cultural codes. The artist is almost always present in her images, and yet they could not be called portraits. These works suggest characters and narratives - sometimes in an quite eerie way.

Kunstbau/Lenbachhaus, München: Gerhard Richter Atlas

Since 1962, Gerhard Richter has been working on his „Atlas“. The Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus purchased  this huge oeuvre in 1996. It has accompanied Richter’s artistic career for many years now and it is a rich source for his creative work. The images are taken from the political domain, cut out from newspapers. There are Richter’s privat family snapshots, collages and sketches. The „Atlas“ allows an in-depth look at the artist’s thinking processes. It is interesting to see which motifs have been used by Richter in his works.

Thomas Schütte is one of Germany’s the most unusual artists. His oeuvre includes sculptures, drawings, watercolors, aswell as prints. Also Schütte’s choice of materials for his sculptures is diverse, ranging from bronze, steel, ceramic to glass. Obviously, Thomas Schütte does not like to restrict himself in his creativity, and his oeuvre offers enough material for four exhibitions in renowned museums – each on with another focus.

Cologne - Ludwig Museum: Louise Lawler. Adjusted

Louise Lawler’s works show just how much the meaning of art is shaped by its context, surroundings, and arrangement-and that there is no impartial way to present art.
Her photographs of works of art in museums, private collections, at auctions, or in storage emphasize the aspects that we usually fail to notice. Astute, sometimes ironic, and never shy of debunking, for thirty years now this conceptual artist born in 1947 has analyzed the art system and all of its complex rules.
The Museum Ludwig has made its entire building available for the artist's first comprehensive survey in Germany: an overview of her major works is supplemented by new pieces in which Lawler reflects on the Museum Ludwig's outstanding collection.

New York - Whitney Museum: Robert Indiana. Beyond Love

Robert Indiana (b. Robert Clark, 1928) first emerged on the wave of Pop Art that engulfed the art world in the early 1960s. Bold and visually dazzling, his work embraced the vocabulary of highway signs and roadside entertainments that were commonplace in post war America. Presciently, he used words to explore themes of American identity, racial injustice, and the illusion and disillusion of love. The appearance in 1966 of what became his signature image, LOVE, and its subsequent proliferation on unauthorized products, eclipsed the public’s understanding of the emotional poignancy and symbolic complexity of his art. This retrospective will reveal an artist whose work, far from being unabashedly optimistic and affirmative, addresses the most fundamental issues facing humanity—love, death, sin, and forgiveness—giving new meaning to our understanding of the ambiguities of the American Dream and the plight of the individual in a pluralistic society.

London - Tate Modern: The EY Exhibition: Paul Klee

Paintings, drawings and watercolours from collections around the world will be reunited and displayed alongside each other as the artist originally intended, often for the first time since Klee exhibited them himself. The EY Exhibition: Paul Klee begins with the artist’s breakthrough during the First World War, when he first developed his individual abstract patchworks of colour that later became characteristic of his ‘magic square’ paintings. The heart of the exhibition will focus on the decade Klee spent teaching and working at the Bauhaus, the hotbed of modernist design. The abstract canvases he produced there, such as the rhythmical composition Fire in the Evening 1929, took his reputation to new international heights.

Amsterdam - Stedelijk Museum: Lawrence Weiner. Written on the Wind

WRITTEN ON THE WIND the first major exhibition devoted to works on paper by Lawrence Weiner (b. 1942, Bronx, New York). Nearly 300 drawings produced over a fifty-year period take visitors on a journey through the artist’s remarkable trajectory in drawing— from cartoons, notebooks, and otherwise unseen working material and sketches, together with formal works on paper. Many works contain his initial thoughts and ideas that are often seen transformed into the artists sculptural works using language. The exhibition cearly shows that drawing is crucial to Weiner’s oeuvre and underlines his entire production.

On the occasion of the upcoming Frankfurter Buchmesse with its focus on Brazil, the SCHIRN will launch a multifaceted group exhibition dedicated to artistic installations in Brazil. The exhibition presents installations from the early 1960s through to new artistic positions to demonstrate the specifically Brazilian approach to art in which the observer is directly involved as a participant. The synthesis of elements from different cultures engendered self-determined characteristic Brazilian art that is powerful, very expressive, and in which a sensory, physical and intellectual penetration of art plays a key role. In this spirit, Brazilian artists, such as Lygia Clark, Dias & Riedweg, Cildo Meireles, Maria Nepomuceno, Ernesto Neto, Hélio Oiticica/Neville D’Almeida, Henrique Oliveira, or Tunga produce expansive artworks that challenge viewers physically, haptically and visually in many ways. This special, sensory thrust of the installations, which at the same time address political, social and ethical issues, has remained alive to this day.

Frankfurt a.M. - Museum für Moderne Kunst: Hélio Oiticica. The great Labyrinth

In the context of Brazil being the Guest of Honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2013, several exhibitions will deal with Brazilian art. For the first time the Schirn Kunsthalle will be showcasing the diversity of Brazilian graffiti art. The specific political and social mood in Brazil’s metropolises has created some of the world’s most vibrant and artistically interesting graffiti scenes. Some of the participating artists are Herbert Baglione, Gais, Rimon Guimarães, Jana Joana & Vitché, Nunca, Onesto, Alexandre Orion, Speto, Fefe Talavera, Tinho und Zezão. The artists are invited to intervene in Frankfurt’s urban space.

The MMK presents the most comprehensive retrospective on the prominent Brazilian artist Hélio Oiticica (1937–1980). Oiticaca’s oeuvre encompasses his early abstract paintings, reliefs which float freely in space, and room installations which can be entered and explored by the visitor.
