Ugo Rondinone - Biography

The internationally renowned Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone (1964) studied at the prestigious University of Applied Arts in Vienna. He lives and works in New York and is committed to conceptual art. Among the central themes of his work are the exploration of spatial aspects as well as the visualization of time and transience. Often Rondinone complements his work with quotes from literature or pop culture. Rondinone is well known as an installation artist, but his graphics occupy a very special position in his oeuvre. In an extremely elaborate printing process, Rondinone produced its Edition »Stars« in 2009 - as a six-part series. The artist succeeds here impressively to give the continuous starry sky a meditative, if not magical, calm. A stark contrast is Rondinone's "Windows." Refreshingly humorous, these graphics of the artist appear as 'windows' and play with the expectations of the view: instead of opening a space behind, intense color surfaces are presented. The autonomy and expressiveness of the color is in the foreground here and is reinforced by the high quality of the lithographic printing. My work is always very basic and almost childlike. It's something people can rely on. "- Ugo Rondinone Rondinone's works are shown internationally in group and solo exhibitions - for example at the Center Pompidou in Paris, at the Bass Museum Miami, at the Kunsthalle Hamburg or at MoMa New York.
