Thomas Stimm - Biography

His daughter was four years old when she inspired him with her flower drawings. Thomas Stimm focuses on the essentials, with his oversized flowers and fruit as well as with his idyllic miniature landscapes. He is interested in the interaction of colors and forms and plays with the proportions of man and nature. He expresses the essence of life in an ironic way by reducing form and content. The bright colors make joy a central theme but is placed in perspective by the depiction of ephemerality via ancient vanitas motifs such as of the blossom. The Austrian Pop-Art-artist uses synthetic resin-varnish to paint on canvas, his sculptures are formed from clay or papier mâché and cast  from aluminium or polyurethane.

The bright colors make joy a central theme.

Born in 1948 in Vienna, the painter and sculptor studied at the Academy for Visual Arts in Vienna and was a member of the group GUM together with Leo Insam and Julius Mende. Together with Uta Weber he founded Soylent Green. A lectureship brought him to West-Australia to the Claremont School of Arts in Perth, he worked as a visiting professor at the art school in Bremen as well as the Städelschule in Frankfurt.
