Imi Knoebel - Biography

Imi Knoebel - Biography

Imi Knoebel engages in analytical series relating between space, material and color. Consistently, Imi Knoebel takes on his earlier work, complements and extends it, or newly re-interprets them.

Political and social commitment

In 1982, Imi Knoebel worked together with Georg Baselitz, Joseph Beuys, Walter Dahn, Jörg Immendorff, Rune Mields, Gerhard Richter, Katharina Sieverding, Thomas Schütte, Günther Uecker and Franz Erhard Walther "against the martial law in Poland - for Solidarność". The previously exhibited works at the Kunstmuseum Dusseldorf were auctioned in favor of Solidarność on 13 November 1982. In 1988 Imi Knoebel created the Kinderstern, an artwork which continually supports to this day the children's rights, in which it finances projects for children in need. John Stüttgen formulated the intension of Kinderstern as follows: "Just as true art, may be mere embellishment and decoration of the prevailing abuses, that hit children the most, Kinderstern is not some charitable idea that will smooth out what is served on behalf of the world's misery prevailing systems. "
