Katharina Grosse - Biography

Katharina Grosse (1961) is internationally regarded as one of the most important artists of all time. Thus, she has made it as a female actor in the male-dominated, top artists.
Grosse lives and works in Berlin. She studied with Gotthard Graubner and Norbert Tadeusz and today holds a professorship for painting at the prestigious Düsseldorf Art Academy.
The innovative art of Grosses receives worldwide attention and recognition, which is reflected in countless exhibitions in prestigious houses and participation in prestigious biennials, such as the Venice Biennale. In addition, Grosse has already been honored with many art prizes. Well-known collectors and large museums have bought large works for their collections; such as the Deutsche Bank Collection, the Center Pompidou in Paris, the Kunsthaus Zürich or the Sprengel Museum Hannover, just to name a few.
Katharina Grosse is known both for indoor and outdoor installations as well as for her striking canvas and graphic works. Their unusual style stands for a complex abstract painting, which is often stratified and extremely colorful. Due to their spray or spray gun technology, white areas and fractures sometimes appear between the layers of the image that irritate and, as it were, cause their images to vibrate.
"Everything I do is motivated by the search for freedom and the ambition to transcend my existence [...]" - Katharina Grosse
