Francesco Clemente - Biography

Suggestive, surreal, mystical-- words that immediately come to mindwhen one sees the work of Francesco Clemente. Out of his many travelsand dynamic life in Italy, the USA, and India has emerged animpressive and expressively colored pictorial language drawing itspower from various myths and symbols.

Clemente's marked interests in art history, spirituality, and diverse cultures allow far-reaching connections to surface in his work. Complexity, overlap, and transformation are ever-recurring elements in the content as well as in his technique. Personal experiences are linked to traditional ones, antiquity is juxtaposed with modernity, old traces are faded and new ones left behind.

"Personal experiences are linked to traditional ones,

ones left behind."

In spite of the diversity of his themes, Clemente returns toself-portraiture again and again, a confrontation with himself in agreat network of memories, cultures, and history. The Italian-American artist, born in 1952 in Naples, initially studiedarchitecture, but then began teaching himself to paint, and isconsidered today one of the main representatives of the postmoderntrans-avant-garde. The Italian group of artists, whose painting in the1970's was emotional, passionate, figurative, and brightly colored, caused a stir in a time when intellectual conceptual art, Arte Povera, and Minimal art predominated. The artist prefers large-sized, handmade paper upon which to paint his pictorial narratives in watercolor, oil, gouache, pastel, or fresco.
