Daniel Buren - Biography

Strips, exactly 8.7 cm wide, in different colors alternating with white, are the trademark of Daniel Buren. Buren has used this "visual tool" since 1966. He wanted to create anonymous works of art, without leaving a signature. This in itself has become his unmistakable artistic signature. Initially it was a revolt, a rebellion against the art system, militating against the institutions themselves. He set out and left his 8.7-cm strips on train doors, escalators, advertisement pillars, and construction site fences. He now works around the world, often in public spaces. The artist studies a specific location, isolates the salient features, and renders them conspicuous through his work. His surfaces include mirrors, wood, Plexiglas, and films just as well as concrete columns or silk scarves.

A French representative of analytic painting and conceptual art, Buren was born in 1938 in Boulogne-Billancourt and completed his art studies in Paris. In 1966-67, with fellow artists Olivier Mosset, Michel Parmentier and Niele Toroni, Daniel Buren founded the group BMPT, whose aim it was to reduce painting to basic geometric forms such as vertical and horizontal strips, circles, and squares.
