Claude Closky

Since the mid-'80s Claude Closky has been compiling and collating lists that obey his own quirky, self-imposed conditions and instructions. Early works include a list of the 3,415 Friday the Thirteenths from the year 1 until 1991.
Another work is Town & Country, a series composed of about one hundred collages of identically formatted magazine pages - from fashion and celebrity publications - glued to a white background, accompanied by text written in ballpoint pen. Located at the bottom of the page, the text serves as a means of titling the images. Each begins identically with “To Die,” followed by a brief description of the different situations: “in bed,” “in foam,” “in high heels,” “in a car park,” etc, creating over one hundred ways of dying.

Closky lives and works in Paris. He left art school (Ecole Nationale Superieure d'Arts Decoratifs) after only one year, so to a large degree he's self-taught. He works with different media, video, photography, internet, drawing, paintings... He was awarded the Prix Marcel Duchamp in 2005 and recently exhibited at the Mac /Val, Vitry, theCentre Pompidou - Paris, the MOMA - New York, and the Mudam – Luxembourg, the Banff Centre - Banff, the Pinacoteca do Estado - Sao Paulo, the Kunstmuseum - Stuttgart, the Pera Museum - Istanbul, the GEM - la Haye.
