Christian Robert-Tissot - Biography
Christian Robert-Tissot (*1960) combines the media language and painting respectively image and text in his typographic works. He juxtaposes those “communication objects” as equal elements. To present his short messages, Robert-Tissot uses different material: He realizes his text-pictures on walls, panels, paper or as sculptural objects from other material such as wire or fluorescent tubes.
The texts and words the Swiss artist chooses are neither extraordinary nor especially profound; the terms the author uses are taken from everyday life: Help, Stress, Blind Spot, Ego, Sometimes I Think, Sometimes I Don’t, No Subject, Tourist, Overlap Smile Baby Life is Fun, ...
Robert-Tissot gives his letters bold shapes and colours, they are often large and fill entire walls or rooms. The artist strives to make the meaning of the words correspond with its form. This integration gives the letters meaning beyond their graphic status, they become one with the art objects.

Robert-Tissot follows a long tradition with his “text art”, together with renowned artists such as Ben, Rémy Zaugg, Mel Bochner or Lawrence Weiner. The word and font have always been integral to art, be it as captions, inscriptions or the signature. Font became an autonomous medium and artistic subject of painting, sculpture, photography and graphic reproductions in the 20th century.
