Andy Warhol

Neuschwanstein

Andy Warhol created this piece in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Bavarian Reinsurance Company. He based the print on a tourism poster of the 19th century Neo-romanticist Neuschwanstein castle on a hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany. The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and as an homage to Richard Wagner. The Neuschwanstein has been in many films and was the inspiration for Disney Land's Sleeping Beauty Castle.
