Andy Warhol

Electric Chair

Andy Warhol’s work, ‚Electric Chair’ is part of the ‚Death and Disaster’ series that the American Pop artist created between 1962 and 1965. In preparation for a comprehensive exhibition in the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Warhol re-created a newer, more colorful series in 1967. The version shown here is a screenprint on cardboard from 1971 that was printed in bright turquoise and luminous lime-yellow. The large-scale work is visually very impressive. An electrical death chair stands quietly in the middle of a room that seems floodlit by bright light. The horizontal geometry of the wall, the floor and the chair brings a certain balance to the composition. This version is starkly reduced to flat surfaces of color that diminish any details of the gruesome killing machine leaving the imagery as a representation of painterly abstraction and aestheticism.
