Tom Wesselmann

Judy trying on clothes

Tom Wesselmann was born in 1931 in Cincinnati, Ohio and died in 2004 in New York. Next to Pop Art legends like Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, Wesselmann became one oft he most important ambassadors of this art movement. The theme that dominates his motifs is the female nude in sexually provocative positions. The most famous examples are his Great American Nudes that are exhibited in museums around the world. The aesthetic of his oeuvre is reminiscient of the advertisements of the 60s and 70s, leaving open the questions of whether he intends to criticize consumerist societies or playfully aggrandize them. The work, Judy Trying on Clothes from 1960 is a typical Wesselmann- the bright and luminous colors signal the artists love for pop art and cartoons, for banal motifs and sexual symbolism.
