Gallery Weekend Berlin takes to the street with ironic puns!

“Thomas Ruff mich an!” (“Thomas call me”) or “Come with me but don't touch my KATZ!” These and similar slogans are to be seen on occasion of the Berlin Gallery Weekend (26-28 April) as so-called Reverse Graffitis and will entertain visitors.

After Guerilla events, which always resemble art happenings, such as a staged demonstration on the premises of the Frieze London, artsation.com now turns to a new project: Reverse Graffiti.

In a cloak-and-dagger operation familiar phrases, in the shape of puns combined with the names of major artists, will be sprayed in large scale onto Berlin's streets by street artists. Thereby, the visitors of the Berlin Gallery Weekend will be entertained in an ironic and amusing fashion. “We want to make passers-by smile. We want to show that art is not always serious and elitist”, Karin Srb, founder and CEO of artsation.com, says.

This special form of graffiti is far from vandalism. Dirty street section are cleaned with a high-pressure cleaner without using chemical detergents. “This procedure is even environmentally friendly”, says Karin Srb. What remains is the shape determined by the template – in this case the letters and cheerfulness.

Furthermore, artsation.com awards the best photo published on facebook or twitter documenting the event, with an artwork from the online gallery.
