Portrait of the Artist as a Young (homosexual) Man
|
The Scandinavian artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset document and analyze behavioural social patterns, which are influenced by the control mechanisms of a heterosexually dominated society. The work "Sorry Mama - Portrait of the artist as a young (homosexual) man" illustrated two black and white photographs of the artists as children. Below the picture, prominent letters plead: Sorry Mama. Subtly the work alludes to standards and expectations, that every young gay man has to deal with. The work's title also refers to James Joyce's political coming-of-age novel, "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" from 1916. More on Elmgreen and Dragset |
