Christian Boltanski

Vanitas

Christian Boltanski, born 1944 in Paris, is an internationally known conceptual artists, whose latest performance represented France at the Venice Biennale 2011. In 2009 Boltanski created the shadow-play installation "Vanitas" for the Kunstprojekte Salzburg, staged in the late Romanesque crypt of the Salzburg Cathedral. The devotional intervention of the artist brought a new awareness of the historic room - as in all his works, the focus was more on the experience and the memories as on the actual presentation. This black and white print shows five images of the metal to figures, that were projected on the wall of the choir krypt with the aid of candlelight.
